Alger Iron Works is established.

It is located on Foundry Street. The company subsequently manufactures much of the weaponry used in the War of 1812, and incorporates as the South Boston Iron Works in 1827. Along with the Atlantic Iron Works and City Point Works, it provides much of the ordnance and munitions for the Union Army in the Civil War.
